About Our Agency Poverty compounds the challenges and stresses that all families face and has a powerful impact on the lives of children. It can reduce the capacity of families to nurture and care for one another. It can decrease the ability of adults to fully recover from a life crisis, illness or personal setback. It can diminish the opportunities, experiences and futures of children. We all want our community to be one in which people are as healthy and independent as they can be but not all children and adults live with the same advantages of adequate food, shelter and clothing. Not all children and adults make their way through life's trials with supportive family, friends and neighbors. That's where the vital programs and services of Simcoe Hall Settlement House step in. It is often a thin line that determines where some people stand and others have fallen. We are so very grateful to our many donors and supporters who stand on that line with us to ensure that less advantaged children, families and adults have the best possible start towards the best possible future. For more information call 905-728-7525 or write to us at info@simcoehall.com. Our Mission Simcoe Hall Settlement House is a not-for-profit community resource centre dedicated, since 1935, to assisting less advantaged children, families and vulnerable adults whose lives are affected by poverty. Our Values We believe that less advantaged children should not have a lesser future because of their circumstances. We believe that less advantaged children should have the best possible start in life through good nutrition, education support and a safe place to be a child for optimum, healthy development during their childhood years. We believe that families and adults should have adequate nutrition, warm clothing, access to information and community support in a time of need. Our Vision A community in which all members have the same fair opportunities and strong foundations upon which to build their future, independent lives. Agency History Our 73rd year of service, like our first, is a proud reflection of a highly principled community with strong values and a commitment to caring for those who have less than others. Simcoe Hall Settlement House was established, in 1935, by the Women’s Welfare League in response to human and health conditions created, largely, by the Great Depression of the 1930’s. During the war years of the 1940’s, the Women’s League remained active and dedicated to aiding the lives of less advantaged families and alleviating the consequences of poverty in Oshawa and surrounding areas. In the post war years of 1950’s, they expanded their vision of a fair and equitable community, in which all members could prosper, by turning their attention to early education, intervention and prevention programs for children and youth. Thousands of adults, living and working in our community to-day, once passed through the doors of Simcoe Hall to attend the Simcoe Hall Nursery School and Children’s After School Programs. Seniors were also welcomed to participate in the community’s first recreation and leisure program called the Golden Age Club which still exists to-day. The Women’s League also embraced several ambitious community building projects in the 1950 and 60’s including the on-site children’s gymnasium building, the construction of Eastview Boys’ and Girls’ Club and the Simcoe Hall Children’s School and Treatment Centre now known as Grandview Children’s Centre. Important programs such as Summer Day Camps and Big Sisters were brought to our community by Simcoe Hall Settlement House. During the recession of the 1980’s, Simcoe Hall expanded their existing food relief services and opened what has become the largest food bank in Durham Region. Regardless of the times we live in there will always be children, families and vulnerable adults who have less than others and will be affected more than most by fluctuations in employment, changes in social policies and shifts in the local and global economy. Our role in the community was then and still is to stand ready to respond with programs and services that assist the lives of less advantaged children and families in the most meaningful ways.
Programs and Services Poverty compounds the challenges and stresses that all families face and has a powerful impact on the lives of children. It can reduce the capacity of families to nurture and care for one another. It can decrease the ability of adults to fully recover from a life crisis, illness or personal setback. It can diminish the opportunities, experiences and the very futures of children. We all want our community to be one in which people, of all ages, are as healthy and independent as they can be but not all children and adults live with the same advantages of adequate food, shelter and clothing. Donation and Volunteer Information Most people are willing to help others but may not know exactly what is needed or how to go about helping their community. They may even wonder if their contribution will really make a difference. A simple phone call can answer that question. Our staff can help you find a program or cause that you strongly believe in so that your donation is as meaningful to you as those who will benefit from it. For more information call 905-728-7525 or write to us at info@simcoehall.com. How to make a Donation Simcoe Hall offers the community a wide variety of programs and services. There are equally as many ways to support our work. Every donated dollar counts and every can of food matters to a child or family in need. How to Volunteer It doesn't require a lot of time or energy to pack food for a family, prepare nutritious after school snacks or help a child learn to read but it does require a lot of heart. Volunteer opportunities range from program support to assisting with a special fund raising event to simply helping people feel valued and cared for in a time of need. We believe that your volunteer experience should be as rewarding to you as it is to those who benefit from your help.
